Explanation

How to use

Adverbs that start with по- are commonly used to describe the manner or method in which an action is performed. These adverbs often indicate a way, style, or means of doing something, and they are derived from adjectives or nouns. This is also the way to describe when somebody speaks a certain language.

How to form

To make this type of adverb from an adjective, remove the last letter -й from the dictionary form of the adjective and add the prefix по-. For example:

  • америка́нский (American) → америка́нский → по-америка́нски (in an American way / in American)

This method of creating adverbs may not work for all adjectives. However, it is commonly used when describing spoken languages. Later in this course, we will cover another way of creating adverbs with по-.
