How to use

To specify an object found in a group of objects, use a demonstrative pronoun: этот, эта, это, эти (this, these) or тот, та, то, те (that, those). The pronoun must agree in gender and number with the noun it refers to. The pronoun group like этот (this) indicates the nearest object, while pronouns like тот (that) indicate a distant object.

These pronouns can be used without the noun if they answer a question. For example:

  • — Какой дом твой? (Which house is yours?) — Этот. (This)

The demonstrative pronoun это is also commonly used with words of any gender when answering the questions Что это? and Кто это? (What is it? Who is this?). For example:

  • — Что это? (What is it?) — Это машина. (It is a car.)
  • — Какая эта машина? (What kind of car is it?) — Эта машина красивая. (This car is beautiful.)
