How to use & How to form

The case system is a grammatical feature that indicates the function of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and numerals within a sentence. Russian has six grammatical cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental, and prepositional. Adjectives and pronouns that modify nouns agree with the nouns they modify in gender and number.

The nominative case is the base form of a word, often referred to as its dictionary form. It is primarily used for subjects and predicate nouns in a sentence. Below are the main usages of the nominative case:

  • Subject of the Sentence: The nominative case is used for the subject — the person, thing, or idea performing the action of the verb.
    • Нина смотрит телевизор. (Nina is watching the TV)
  • Predicate Nouns: A noun following a linking verb (such as быть) or dash punctuation is in the nominative case. Predicate nouns provide more information about the subject.
    • Мой папа — шофёр. (My father is a driver)
  • Naming and Identification: The nominative case is used to name or identify people, objects, or concepts.
    • Меня зовут Анна. (My name is Anna)
    • Это мой дом. (This is my house)
  • Existence or possession of an object. Words in the nominative case can indicate the existence or possession of an object.
    • В городе есть супермаркет. There is a supermarket in a city.
    • У меня есть машина. (I have a car)
  • Addressing People: When addressing someone directly, their name or title is in the nominative case.
    • Привет, Мария! (Hello, Maria!)
    • Доктор, помогите! (Doctor, help!)

The nominative case answers the questions кто? or что? (who? what?).

Adjectives, numerals, and pronouns in the nominative case must agree with the noun they modify in gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and number (singular, plural).
